The Five Wise Virgins: the power of light, love and preparedness
The biblical parable of the five wise and five foolish virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) is not just a lesson in being prepared and thinking ahead. It carries a deeper spiritual message too. In the picture here, the five wise virgins carry not only their glowing lamps but also their power stations, which stand for the extra oil: the reserve that goes beyond earthly readiness.
Light and love
Light is not only a symbol of foresight. It is much more than that: the presence of love in the human heart. Where there is light, there is life and warmth. But where darkness rules, where fear is in charge, love slowly grows cold. Jesus himself warned:
“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” (Matthew 24:12)
The power of God is the oil we need so that our love doesn't run out in times of hardship and trial. The five wise virgins weren't only far-sighted. They carried within them that reserve, that divine strength, which let them shine even in the dark.
What does the picture stand for?
- The glowing torches: symbols of love and of God's presence. Light doesn't only let you see, it also gives off warmth and safety.
- The power stations (the extra oil): the strength of God that makes us able to love. Those who draw on it don't let their hearts grow cold, but keep their faith and love even in the deepest darkness.
- The prepper outfit: it means not only physical readiness, but an inner stance that says: “Whatever happens, I go forward armed with the strength of God.”
Love as true preparedness
The message of the parable still holds today. The world often tests people's faith and love. Many struggle with fear and uncertainty, and at times like that the inner strength that is able to love can easily run dry. But whoever draws on God's strength is never left without oil.
As the apostle Paul writes:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
So true preparedness doesn't lie only in material things, but in whether we have enough “oil”, that is, enough of God's strength, to keep the flame of love burning in us. The example of the wise virgins teaches us that we need to be ready, not only for the unexpected, but to be able to love in every situation.
So the question is: do you have enough oil?
