How to make a simple compass with a stick and two stones
Have you ever got lost out in nature and wished you had a compass? With a bit of creativity and a few simple steps, you can easily make one yourself. This method works anywhere in the world and needs no special equipment. Here's how to make a simple but effective compass:
1. Use a shadow and a stone to find the directions
- Push a stick about 90 cm (3 ft) long into the ground so that it stands upright.
- Put a small stone on the spot where the tip of the stick's shadow falls. This is your first mark.
2. Watch the shadow move
- Wait 10-15 minutes for the shadow to move.
- Put a second stone where the tip of the shadow has moved to.
3. Draw an east-west line
- Draw a line between the two points (the first and the second stone). This line shows the east-west direction.
4. Find north
- Stand facing the line:
- Put the toe of your left foot on the first stone (west).
- Put the toe of your right foot on the second stone (east).
- Now you are facing north.
How does it work?
This simple method is based on the movement of the Sun. Anywhere on Earth, the first shadow mark shows west and the second shows east. With this technique you can get your bearings quickly when you don't have a compass to hand.
